By Midnight trailer, changes...

We made changes to the video using people feedback. This is because once we had created the trailer we noticed that we had the green screen at the end of the trailer instead of the beginning so decided to go back and change this.

My Film Trailer "By Midnight"

Here is the first edit of our film trailer:

When creating this film trailer we tried to follow a lot of the conventions of a action film trailer, as you can see we looked at others such as Die Hard.

We included titles all the way through and made sure they gave the right information away such as main stars, directors names and the producers.

The music which was used was taken from itunes and is fast paced to keep the audience entertained, i had emailed the music company informing them the purpose of using the music.

I have included a green screen making the film trailer look more realistic, i may change where the green screen goes because of feedback which may be given.

Using a female as the main character playing the terrorist role goes against typical forms and conventions which made the film stand out from many others.

My Film magazine front cover "By Midnight"

For the films magazine front cover i followed typical forms and conventions looking at other magazines such as total film and empire. I noticed how they include a bold title which is used in every issue of the magazine so decided i would create one with a catchy name.

The main film which is on the front cover includes a picture which stands out and entices the audience, which i have tried to achieve and also includes the name of the film in bold too. I used the colours which i had used for the poster and trailer which allows the audience to link all three products together this is a use of synergy linking all three products together to advertise the movie.

Buzz words such as "exclusive" and "reveals" are used to entice the audience making them want to read on and buy the magazine. Other stars where also mentioned on the front cover making the audience wider showing how the whole magazine isn't focused on By Midnight film but other films and stars are included.

The price, date of issue and issue number is included in small print showing how this isn't as important but obviously stills needs to be included.
The colour scheme red, yellow and black also makes the magazine edgy and stands out from other magazines drawing people's eye onto the front cover.

My Film Poster "By Midnight"

When creating this film poster by midnight i looked at others to get a style model, i found that film posters are quite plain and don't include too much information, making it easy for people to read walking past.

I used an image which was taken during the day and edited it using photoshop making it look more dramatic in the dark using a spotlight to highlight the main star. The title is very bold and have used the same colours which was used in the trailer which allows the target audience relate and link the two products together.

Other information which was included was directors names, producers and any other films which was made by the same directors etc. This is in a smaller white font underneath the title showing how this is less important to be shown but still needs to be added.

The age rating was included indicating how old the audience has to be to watch the movie in the pictures.

The catchy quote is used in the bottom right hand corner, it gives an insight into the movie which is also used to entice the audience and hints the genre.

New storyboard

We decided to change out storyboard and plot slightly one of the reasons for this was because we couldn't use a classroom but also because we thought it was too much of a complicated story to have both terrorist threat and hijacking in the trailer it may give away to much of the story.

Here is our new storyboard:

Scripts

We will create a script before filming our media project, this will help us be more prepared on set and allow actors to practise there lines.

We are not really including much speech in the trailer but the news report will need a script explaining what is going on.

(Scene 1: news room)

News reporter: A bomb has been discovered on a train in London. It was found on the train at Liverpool Central. Attempts to disarm the bomb have been made and the station has been evacuated.
Students in a school in Liverpool have been held hostage we have reason to believe they are connected.

Music which may be used...

The type of music used is crucial, in many trailers the music seems to be fast and gives a sense of the genre.
I looked at other films which use the style we will be creating and can follow how they used sound and music to create the trailer and give it a lot of impact.
We looked at Die Hard 4 trailer, which uses some sharp sounds to create effect of bad things happen sometimes when not expected. Please watch this and make any comments if you wish.

Actors list

Picking characters will be hard, we have many characters in our film but need a main character. This main character will be featured in most clips on the trailer and be the main star on the front cover of the magazine and on the poster. This person will be the hero for the film.

Terrorist - Ally Evans

We originally wanted a male to play the terrorist however we decided to go against conventions.

news reporter - Melissa Pevie

extra's - people on train and at the station.

Storyboards

This is our first plan of the storyboard, however this may change.

List of shots that may be used

There are a lot of shots that can be used, in my film i will use many different ones to show i can produce a film with a lot of different techniques used.

Shots i may use are:

Close ups - these are used to show the feelings of a character or something important like an object.

medium shot - this is used to show half of the subject for example the character from the waist up.

long shot - this shows the whole character.

establishing shot - this normally is used at the start of a scene and shows where the scene is, for example set at a train station will show the atmosphere and trains coming in.

reaction shot - which shows the reactions of people's words on people around them.

I will try to use all of these at one point of my trailer, this will show my techniques. There are also many camera angles that i will you when creating my trailer, these are:

high angle shot - this shows everything above eye level creating a sense of power to the audience and making characters seem helpless and weak.

eye level - neutral showing everyone is equal.

low angle - looking up at the character, gives people the impression of a strong leader, powerful.

These are just a few that i will use when creating my trailer. The camera has different movements which i may also use in my trailer, these are:

Tracking - this is when the camera follows the subject, for example follows the character walking, camera moves left to track them.

Dollying - this is when the camera's position changes by moving forward or backwards.

Panning - when the camera stays in the same position but moves left or right, this can show people around them or the scenery.

Tilting - when the camera moves up or down, for example the camera looks up at the sky.

Zoom in/ Zoom out - this is when the character focuses on something and can zoom into it for example zooms into ring on characters finger then zooms back out.

I will use most of these when creating my film trailer.

Make-up requirements

Make-up used in films is very important. You can portray a lot from the use of make-up, for example using it to make someone look beaten up can show the genre of the film and makes the audience feel a certain way for this character.

In the film Batman Begins the joker wears a lot of make-up making him look like a scary clown, this makes the audience feel scared and gives him an evil look to suit his personality in the film.

For my film i will make my make-up look realistic but make sure people can identify the victims etc.

Costume choices...

The clothes mise en scene used creates some effect on the audience. For example someone wearing all black would be suspected as being the guilty one they would seem kind of 'shaddy'.

When creating my own, i will be very aware of the clothes and pick clothes which show the characters in certain ways. The ideas that we have come up with will involve some very good costumes, we will need a suit for the news reporter to show her as a professional working woman and other clothes such as jeans, black hoods etc.

We would like our news reporter to wear a suit so it look professional and realistic; this will allow the audience to make it feel more of a professional film.

In the film Jennifer's body they used a white dress and covered blood all over it, this has been used for a reason to create effect on the audience making it some how disturbing and slightly disgusting.

Locations...

When looking at what type of film i am going to create i had decided that the genre Horror/ Thriller would be a good option, this is because we can create tension through a lot of things including the music, camera angles and location.

The location which i will use has a huge impact on creating the tension, setting it somewhere like a church grave yard or an abandoned house would create a lot of tension as these are scary places.

For my own film i would like to find a few places which could help the with a scary impact for my film, although my film is going to be set in public places due to the ideas we have come up with. Possibly on a train and train stations.

analysis of front cover of film magazine Public Enemies...

This is what i found when looking at the front cover with Public Enemies on the front. It is very similar to other types of magazine such as a music magazine. You can see this bigger if you click on the image or i have listed what i found below.

  • The Empire title is brand loyalty this is the same for every magazine issue created which allows people to quickly identify this magazine from others as well as making people feel as if it is a trustworthy brand.

  • Picture of Johnny Depp wearing a suit and holding a gun shows him to be a gangster again attracting the male audience.

  • Johnny Depp attractive for women

  • Date and Price of magazine is included in small print showing it isn't as important

  • mist/ smoke used to create fear or tension, re-enforces the genre and is used in all three the trailer, poster and magazine front cover could be a key issue.

  • Buzz words such as "First Look" are used again to entice the audience to pick this magazine over any other.

  • Other movies mentioned to make the audience wider so people can read about other great films.

Analysis of film Trailer Public Enemies

Before making my own trailer, i had done research for trailers, posters and magazine front covers so when making my own i can use many techniques and follow conventions used.

I analysed the film trailer Public Enemies i feel this trailer meets the type of genre that i would like to do when creating mine.

Public Enemies trailer included:

  • distributor Universal was shown at the very start - type of brand loyalty, people trust this company.

  • old type plane with the date 1933, this sets the scene

  • black and white at start also shows the date.

  • 'spooky' non diegetic music, indicates the genre almost sounds like bond style music.

  • Mise en scene characters carrying guns and wearing uniforms.

  • cuts with text appearing on the screen telling the storyline

  • speeding cars, a lot of firing of the guns suggests a male target audience

  • then shows other movies that the makers have made for example 'Collateral'

  • attractive girl is shown this appeals to men, although it seems to be a romance which makes the audience wider with more females liking romance.

  • main character is in every scene

  • close up of characters and names of big stars in this film

  • fades from one character to the other, introducing the main stars

  • title of the film comes at the end, with a last shot of the main character re-loading his gun then a flash suggesting a gun shot and director titles are shown.

  • coming soon written at the very end shows people having to wait for the film.

Analysis of film poster Public Enemies...

This is the public enemies film poster which i have analysed you can click on the image above to see it bigger or i have listed things i have picked out below.

  • Main character attractive appeals to female audience

  • holding a weapon appeals to the male audience indicates fighting

  • Mise-en-scene the male wearing a suit shows more about the genre, perhaps gangster.

  • distributors and production company in small at the bottom shows them to be less important and showing how people are attracted to more of the star, genre and plot than who produces the film.

  • the main title, stars and date of release is in bold and stands out this entices the audience and informs them of when the film is out etc.

  • the setting shows tall buildings and american flag, seems like it could be the financial district showing wealth.

  • the old cars and everything in black and white sets the era of the film

  • the use of mist/ smoke creates a sense of fear again relates to the genre.

Questionnaire.

I have created a questionnaire to find out what my audience want from a film.

Please click here to fill out my questionnaire.

Analysis of shutter island film trailer.

When looking at the film trailer i noticed a lot of key features used. In this specific trailer i found:

  • Sharp cuts
  • lights flashing
  • main character Leonardo DiCaprio in every scene - appeals to male and female because he is attractive but also got a 'rugged' look, males could aspire to be like him.
  • shows a mystery - people looking confused and scared
  • a flame is used in both poster and trailer seems like a logo.
  • main character talks about fear - creates tension
  • sharp sounds
  • scary music
  • ending is faster cuts, cuts making main character look mental
  • film title was featured in the middle of the trailer
  • death and weapons featured in the film shows what type of genre the film is.
  • sharp scream at the end and someone attacking Leonardo DiCaprio shows horror genre
  • voice overs are used
  • clip of against the cells shows caged in
  • date of the film and distributor ends the trailer.

Shutter Island Magazine front cover analysis.

Here i have shown everything i have noticed about the features of this magazine front cover and will use this to follow the same techniques in creating my own. Please leave any comments if you think i have left anything out thanks!

Theorists that may come up in my coursework!

Richard Dyer's star theory.

When looking at his star theory he states "the star image is made up of a lot of meanings which are attractive to the target audience" this indicates how something is shown to appeal to its intended audience. In paradox one of this theory it says "someone people can aspire to be like", this shows how the main star needs to be someone the target audience can in some ways relate to but also be someone the audience can aspire to be like. I believe this theory would fit in well when picking my characters for the film.

Cohen's Moral Panic

This could also be used during my coursework. This theory (1972) outlines how something like a condition, episode, person or groups of people can emerge as a threat to societal values, for example 'Swine Flu' this deals with how something bad could be happening in the world and the media cover the topic sometimes creating more panic. I could use this theory in my coursework if i set my film based around a topic which causes great fear amoung the society.

Feminism

Laura Mulvey's theory focuses on how males and females are represented in films they can be looked at in 2 ways; voyeuristically and fetishically.

Male characters are normally shown as being active, dynamic and not always conventionally attractive. On the other hand women must be glamorous and attractive but they are only in supporting roles; therefore they are on screen as 'eye-candy' to appease the male audience. This may be followed in my own film with a male characters as the main star and the supporting actress being very glamorous and attractive, this way attracting a larger audience.

Blumler and Katz theory

These theorists state five reasons why people watch the media, these are: entertainment, information, identify with characters and situations, to enable themselves to socially interact with others by watching, listening or reading media and then discuss them and to escape from their daily troubles. At least one of these reasons will be why the audience have picked to watch the film.

Reception theory

This shows how different people can read into things in different ways. This is because of gender, class, age or ethnicity. This may be used in my film because people will read into the story in their own ways.

Production Schedule

This is my Production schedule i have created this to help me check i am keeping up with my work and have set myself deadlines for my work. Please click on the above image to see this table bigger.

Poster of Shutter Island analysis.

Here i have analysed the film poster for shutter island, this will allow me to follow the techniques used when creating my own film poster.

Start of research

What have you found out in your secondary research so far?

I have been looking at posters, film magazine covers and trailers of certain films and brands are included in all. For example in Shrek there is an image of an ‘S’ with ears included, this is added into every poster, trailer and magazine cover, this helps to represent the film and the logo becomes well known. Another example is the Superman logo which is featured in all posters, magazine covers and trailers. This is always shown as it is worn on the main character all the way through the film and is heavily dependent on its branding. Its enemy Batman wears a different logo and is also heavily dependant on its logo. So in my media film I know to make a brand and include it in my poster, trailer and magazine cover.

What will be your biggest challenge?

My challenge will be creating a short trailer which entices people to see a film. I think I will struggle shortening my film down as I don’t want to give away too much information, but make sure it is good enough to attract a big audience.

What is your next step?

My next step is to get my questionnaire filled in and find out what my target audience want. I will also complete analysis of film trailers, posters and the front cover of magazines.

My Project Brief

For my media coursework this year I have to create a trailer for a film, a poster for this film and also a magazine cover; these will all help to promote this new up and coming film. The film which I will be creating is due for release around Valentines Day so some genres will be more dominant around this time for example romantic comedies will be very popular. I will keep this in mind when picking my genre of the film.

My intentions of the project are to create a successful trailer, poster and magazine cover which will entice the audience to come and see the film. I need to make sure I meet my target audience. A way to check that I meet my target audience is to create a questionnaire and find out what my audience likes in films.

First I intend to create a questionnaire to find out what my intended audience want in a film and also what genre most people would be interested in round this time of year.

For my research I will create a questionnaire which will help me find out a lot about my target audience. I will also study a lot of film trailers so I can get information and find out what is included in trailers; for example distributor’s names, voice overs and what types of cuts are used.
